First Section of the Dictionary Dictionary A section

Anger Management This is an area that is greatly helped by Meditation. .......... Anger is usually produced as a response to Stress, so any meditation that deals with getting rid of Stress on a long term basis, will also be very beneficial as a powerful tool for Anger Management. (See the CD and MP3 Download page on this website, where there is a very effective Guided Meditation for Stress in both CD and MP3 format).

Aum Meditation This is an alternative spelling for the original Root – or BIJA mantra – usually spelt as OM...........It is used in Mantra Meditation as detailed on the Mantra page on this website – which is accessed through the Meditation Types page on the left toolbar - where there is full information about this Mantra, and full instructions how to use it in Meditation. There is also a Dictionary of the Bija Mantras in my Mantra Meditation E-Book in the E-Books section.

Second Section of the Dictionary Dictionary B section

Barefoot Yoga Yoga is very commonly taught and practiced barefoot, this gives much better grip on the floor, besides giving a stronger connection to the Earth if done outdoors, and is more comfortable in postures where the feet are pressed tight against the body.

Bi-Polar This is a term that usually refers to a mood disorder that used to be called Manic Depressive illness – that is characterized by severe mood swings from Depression on the one hand, to unusually elevated mood states (called Hypomania), on the other. ...........Meditation can help in “smoothing out” these sudden mood swings, and thereby making the condition less traumatic to the person so affected.

Bible Meditation A form of meditation that can utilize one of two techniques – either using the slow careful reading of selected Bible passages, usually from the New Testament, as a form of meditation in itself – or can also refer to a more modern form of Christian Meditation using an Aramaic Mantra, as outlined in my webpage Mantras, which is accessed through the Meditation Types page, that you can easily click on in the TOOLBAR on the upper Left on this Dictionary page, and all the other pages.

Biomedical Instruments This refers to any instrument that may be used to investigate, record, affect or observe any aspect of the human organism (and would include Xray Machines, CAT Scans, MRIs, ECG and EEG machines, Pulse and Blood Pressure recorders and so on )...........In the context of Meditation however, it usually refers more commonly to the instruments used in investigation of the brain electrical activity changes during meditation – or the instruments that are used in similar disciplines such as Biofeedback. ..........(For further information see my WebPages on How it Works and Biofeedback).

Brainwaves in Meditation Refers to the speed of the electrical discharges in the brain at different meditation levels, and also how these can be manipulated to make meditation much more efficient........... See my webpage ;- How-it-works for the first meaning, and Entrainment for the second.

Brainwave Generator A Brainwave may be produced by external pulses at the frequency desired for a particular meditation level – this can be called a Brainwave Generator, and is discussed in full detail on the Entrainment page.

Buddhist Mantras These all originated and were borrowed from very ancient Hindu Mantras, the originals were created more than 2000 years ago, and are in regular use by the majority of Buddhist disciplines today - a very effective means of meditation.............(to learn more go to the Mantras page, which is accessed through the Types page )

Buddhist Meditation Accessories - - Buddhist Meditation Bells - - Buddhist Meditation Tools There are several outlets that provide these in form or another – one of the best that I have one come across is www.dharmacrafts.com

Buddhist Retreats There are many places offering Buddhist retreats, if you check through a Google search; you probably will be able to find some that are near to your home. For a particularly good place for Zen Buddhist retreats (but only in the summer), I can strongly recommend the Tassajara Center, who can be reached through;- www.sfzc.org/tassajara

Buddhist Meditation Clothing Several places offer Buddhist type meditation clothing, however a lot of them specialize in ‘made to measure’ type clothing, which tends to be expensive. A couple of the more reasonable selections can be found at these two websites;- http://www.dharmacrafts.com and http://www.fourgates.com

Third Section of the Dictionary Dictionary D section

Different types of Meditation There are many different types of meditation and the majority of these are detailed in my Meditation Types page, which can be accessed from the toolbar on the upper left side of this Dictionary page, and on all the other WebSite pages.

Download Free Music See the entry titled ‘Free Download Meditation Music’ below.

Drumming Meditation Drumming has been used by many spiritual disciplines as a means of inducing trance-like states. This is usually achieved by having the rate of the drum beats being about at the same as the rate for brainwaves that are found in a meditative state – usually about 10 beats per second or so. This gives a definite Entrainment effect - that rapidly induces a meditation-like state. For a good overview on all aspects of drums and drumming, including meditation drumming, visit this website;- http://www.bodhranwisdom.co.uk/Pages/Home.html

Duality This is, in effect, the opposite of UNITY – which is the Buddhist concept that there is no separateness between us and everything else around us (this is typified in the Buddhist saying;- Tat Tvam Asi, which translates as ‘That Also am I’). Duality therefore refers to the opposite concept – that there IS separateness between us and the surrounding world – which Buddhism claims is a false idea, but that you will only fully realize once you have reached Enlightenment – described as Complete Understanding of the Universe.

Fourth Section of the Dictionary Dictionary E section

Eastern Meditative Practices Meditation History The history of meditation (most of which originated in the East) – goes back some 3000 years. For a fairly comprehensive overview, see my webpage;- History

Energy Meditation Almost all meditations will tend to give you a sense of renewed energy, as they are giving you a deep mental and physical rest and relaxation, which will tend to make you feel full of increased Energy. However, it is also possible to create a Specific Energy Guided Meditation to increase Energy levels even more – such as I have put together in my Energy-Yoga Guided Meditation CD or MP3 download, on the page of my website called; CD and MP3s page.

Fifth Section of the Dictionary Dictionary F section

Flashing Lights and Meditation Flashing lights can be used as a means to Entrain brainwaves at the same rate that the lights are flashing, this is discussed on my webpage Entrainment - and for experimentation that you can try yourself – by making your monitor screen flash at different rates, go to http://jollython.com/sft/flasher.html - but DO NOT USE THIS RESOURCE IF YOU HAVE EPILEPSY OR ANY SEIZURE DISORDER.

Free Download Meditation Music - - Free Guided Meditation - - Free Guided Meditation MP3 - - Free Guided Meditation Music MP3 - - Free Guided Meditation Relaxation - - Free Meditation Download - - Free Meditation Downloads - - Free Meditation MP3 - - Free Meditation Music For all of these headings, I would like to refer you to my;- CD and MP3s page you will see that what I am offering is a FREE MP3 download of your choice if you give me some accepted feedback about the CD(s) or MP3(s) that you have bought. As regards Meditation Music, I would recommend the Bolero Music Meditation one, which has music as a powerful meditation background. As well, most of my Guided Meditations have Entrainment added, and usually using the addition of Meditation Music, to make them much more powerful and effective. (If you do not know what Entrainment is, then go to my; - Entrainment page).

Free Guided Meditation Scripts - - Free Meditation Online - - Free Meditation - - Scripts For these headings, you should go to my webpage; - Meditate - Guided page - where I present a varied selection of Scripts, for you to copy and use, but I also wish to point out that my Pre-Recorded Guided Meditations are MUCH more powerful and effective, because of the Entrainment added to them.

Free Meditation Tapes I have tried doing pre-recorded Meditation tapes in the past, but there is one major problem – (even with the best quality tape) – and that is that with frequent playing, (say twice daily for a month or so), the tape begins to stretch, and this distorts the Entrainment beats embedded in the meditation, so that they are not so effective any more. Therefore I stopped creating these, as have nearly all suppliers that I am aware of.

Free Meditation Techniques For these, see the sections above on Free Guided Meditation Scripts, and also Free Meditations above.

Sixth Section of the Dictionary Dictionary G section

Gamma Waves These are Brainwaves that are firing at a rate of between 24 and upwards of 70 beats per second – they are associated with perception and consciousness, and some authorities include them with Beta waves, rather than a separate entity. They are often seen from many areas of the brain simultaneously during difficult problem solving. Interestingly, they are also seen in light REM or dreaming sleep states. See my page called How it Works for much more information on this topuc, and other Brainwave patterns.

Gregorian Chant A form of monophonic, usually unaccompanied chant that is the main form of chanting in the Catholic Church. It has been practiced for over 1000 years, and although the tones are fairly limited, it can have a calm beauty all of its own. For examples of Gregorian Chant (also called Plainsong), go to Wikipedia - to the page called Gregorian Chant, where there are recordings of different styles that you can listen to. Also listen to some of the recordings of monks singing in Plainsong that are available.

Guided Imagery Meditation Is a type of Guided Meditation where the person guiding the meditation uses hypnosis-like suggestion to create the illusion of an alternate reality in the imagination of the listener. An example of this is my SPACE Guided meditation CD in the CD and MP3 page of my website – where the use of Entrainment and hypnosis-like techniques make the listener feel that the Guided Imagery creates an almost REAL Space environment

Seventh Section of the Dictionary Dictionary H section

Hands in Meditation Hand position in meditation is not of critical importance – comfort and relaxation comes as the first priority. Most people put their hands in their lap whilst meditating, usually with one cupped hand lying in the other with palms up. However, there is also a longstanding tradition in the Buddhist and Hindu traditions, where hand positions assume much more importance. This array of different hand positions to be used in meditation are known collectively as Mudra, and Wikipedia has an excellent article under the same name, with examples and explanations of each Mudra discussed.

Hemisync A company that uses Binaural Beats to entrain brainwaves to the required frequency for deeper meditation. Binaural beats were initially developed by the Munroe Institute in the USA, but other forms of entrainment have since been found to me more effective than Binaural beats. See my webpage Entrainment page for more information about this.

History of Meditation A complete overview of the History of Meditation is available on my webpage - History

How does Meditation Work See my webpage - How it Works for a complete overview on this topic.

How Much Does Meditation Cost The cost of meditation depends very much on what you intend to do with it, and how involved you will be. For example, if you just want to learn how to do simple meditations, then this website will give you all the information that you need for FREE - but if you wish to buy meditation tapes or E-Books, and buy meditation clothing and other accessories, and perhaps create a traditional meditation room with special meditation furniture and so on - then the sky is the limit! Most people will probably end up paying $100 or more, on CDs, MP3 downloads, Seiza Benches or Zafus etc - but that probably spread over 2 or 3 years as they get more involved.

How to Use Meditation Mandalas Mandalas are usually some form of symmetrical "holy picture" that often include images of Buddha and/or some of the multitude of Buddhist "saints" or Bodhisattvas. They are used in meditation by keeping a fixed attention on the centre of the picture, and often combined with a Mantra meditation at the same time. For further details and examples, visit my webpage - Mandalas page, which is a sub page from the Meditation Types page.

Humming Chinese Meditation Bowl Purchase These are actually Tibetan humming meditation bowls. They were made by the Tibetan monks, using a secret mix of five different metals. They were played two ways - firstly by being struck with a small mallet or similar - which produced a complex ringing tone that contained many overtones, and secondly (and more importantly), by running a wooden rod-like stick around the rim of the bowl - which produced an extraordinary haunting complex tone with many multiple overtones. Unfortunately, with the Chinese overthrow of Tibet, and the killing of many Tibetan monks, the secret process of making these bowls has been lost, and the ancient formula for the alloys of the five different metals is not known any more. Modern bowls use other mixtures of metals, or even other materials such as "crystal", but only produce a single sound tone, without the complex overtones - which does not have nearly the same effect as the original antique bowls. Consequently there is great demand for the original antique and genuine Tibetan Bowls - and in consequence, real ones are very expensive. Modern (single tone) copies are much less expensive, and are available through http://www.dharmacrafts.com/104xBG/-Bells-Gongs-Timers.html

Eighth Section of the Dictionary Dictionary I section

Indian Meditation Music This is mainly Hindu Meditation music, and usually is centered around the rather hypnotic sounds of the traditional multi-stringed instrument called the Sitar - the best known player of this instrument is called Ravi Shankar, and almost any of his recordings can be used as a meditation. To access these, I would suggest going to Google search and entering ‘Ravi Shankar’ and there are thousands of suitable links.

Information on Meditation This whole website gives a very complete look at all aspects of Meditation, and therefore is a great resource for any Information on this topic.

Inspirational Quotes Without doubt, the best resource for these is to enter this as the subject in a Google search – you will be given the choice of more than 3 million different entries – which should keep you busy for a while !

Ninth Section of the Dictionary Dictionary L section

Learning to Meditate This website will literally give you all you need in order to learn to meditate - with do-it-yourself examples of several different kinds of meditation, and full instructions in an easy-to-understand step-by-step manner.

Tenth Section of the Dictionary Dictionary M section

Mantras for Meditation See my website page which is uniquely about all aspects of Mantras, and is a sub page of the heading Meditation Types in the toolbar on the left towards the top of this Dictionary page, and all the other pages. Also, I have an E-Book available called Mantra Meditation on my E-Books page, that goes into this topic in much more detail.

Massage and Meditation Because Massage is such a relaxing thing in its own right, then combining it with Meditation at the same time makes the meditation much deeper than otherwise- which also makes the body more relaxed so the massage can become more effective also. In other words they are mutually complementary to each other. However, if you are going to meditate at the same time as your massage – make sure that you let the massage therapist know – so that he/she won’t interrupt you with chatty conversation!

Meditation and Biofeedback On my Biofeedback page on this website, I give a good overview of the subject – however, I feel that Biofeedback is only of use to confirm that the meditation is having the desired effect on the Brainwaves, and I also feel that working with both at the same time would tend to be distracting. However, on my Biofeedback page I give a link to a website that gives information about biofeedback applications in greater detail – that may be helpful to you.

Meditation and Depression Depression is a condition that is becoming more and more common in our sometimes overwhelming world. It usually is either as a reaction to a specific incident, such as the death of a loved one, or something similar – the so-called Reactive Depression, or just arrives ‘out-of-nowhere’ for no obvious reason – called Endogenous Depression. Either way, it can be highly debilitating, and can be very destructive of a normal life at the time. Meditation can be very useful in this situation, but ideally should be entered into cautiously, and with the individual supervision of a health practitioner or meditation teacher who is familiar with the personal situation.

Meditation and Teens There is absolutely no reason why teens should not meditate – in fact it can be enormously useful to them in this time of surging emotions, confusion, searching for a self identity, peer pressure and so on. However, as I have mentioned on this website - because of their often shorter attention spans – teenagers should start to meditate at 50 percent of the time for adults (i.e. adults usually ideally should meditate for 20 minutes twice daily for maximum benefit, so teenagers should start at half that time – 10 minutes twice daily ). After about a week, if all is well, they can then increase to 15 minutes twice daily, then up to the full 20 minutes twice daily after a further week. This seems to be a much more effective way for teenagers.

Meditation Art Pictures These can be of various types, depending on what is meant by this – the most common are the Mandalas and Tankas as shown on my Mandalas page under the Meditation Types page. However this can also refer to almost any of the more ancient and traditional Christian pictures, many of which may be used as Meditation objects of devotion.

Meditation Bell - - Meditation Bells - - Meditation Bells on Sale Bells are used in meditation, usually to signal the beginning or end of a meditation, or a transition to a different form, as in Zazen. http://www.dharmacrafts.com/104xBG/-Bells-Gongs-Timers.html have some for sale.

Meditation Bench Measurements See my webpage Tools for complete easy instructions and measurements to build your own Seiza Meditation bench.

Meditation Benefits Stress Stress is something that can be really helped by meditation. Almost any kind of meditation will be beneficial to help to relieve stress – but obviously a form of meditation that has been specially designed for stress will be the best. For very effective examples of this go to my page - CD and MP3s

Meditation Bowls See the entry above titled "Humming Chinese Meditation Bowl Purchase."

Meditation Breathing Techniques The most common type of Meditation Breathing Techniques are as practiced by the Yoga discipline. They use many different Techniques to control breathing in one way or another during meditation, many of which are very difficult. For two examples of easier ones, go either to my Yoga page, which is accessed from the Meditation Types page, or else the Circle Meditation, which is accessed from the Meditate – Guided page.

Meditation Chimes I have been unable to find a good supplier of Meditation Chimes (I am assuming that this refers to Wind Chimes), but I have come across wind chimes in the past that were made from about one foot long thin long Obsidian pieces – that gave a very meditative sound. (Obsidian is a form of Volcanic Glass that is found near many extinct Volcanoes worldwide). If you can find such a thing, I suspect that they give the best sound, much better than metal or crystal wind chimes.

Meditation Cloak A cloak is an ideal accessory for meditation as it can envelop the body as much or as little as you want – ones with a hood are the best. Because your body temperature usually falls during meditation it is important to make sure that you will be warm enough, and a cloak can usually be easily made if you have even a little sewing skill. I used to have one that was made from a cut up blanket that worked just fine. If you wish to purchase one however, there are very good ones available at; - http://www.dharmacrafts.com/101xMC/Meditation-Clothing.html

Meditation Clock The important things to consider when purchasing a clock to use for timing your meditations are, firstly – that the clock does NOT have a loud tick that could be intrusive on your meditation, and secondly – that the alarm, when it goes off, is not loud and ‘shocking’ to the system. Dharma Crafts has some suitable meditation clocks at; - http://www.dharmacrafts.com/104xBG/-Bells-Gongs-Timers.html

Meditation Clothes See the ‘Buddhist’ Meditation Clothing heading above.

Meditation Colors Colors are often used within the context of meditation, as each color has a corresponding ‘resonance,' either with the emotions generated by each color, or by the connections to the traditional colors associated with each Chakra. For further details about this, check out my Chakras and Chi Energy page, which is a sub page of the What is Meditation page. For further information on color meditations, go to either the Meditate – Guided page, or else the CD and MP3s page

Meditation Does it Work Very definitely Meditation DOES work, and has helped many millions of people worldwide through the ages. For some insight into exactly how this happens, go to my How it Works page.

Meditation Downloads See the relevant headings above, depending on whether you are looking for Meditation Scripts, CDs, or MP3 downloads.

Meditation Gift Box Meditation Gifts I have not come across any organization offering Meditation Gift Boxes as such, (and I have searched extensively!) I think that the best thing to do is to check out the various websites that offer Meditation Accessories, and buy a variety of things, then pack them up nicely in your own gift box. Some websites to consider would be ;- http://www.dharmacrafts.com - - - http://www.bodhranwisdom.co.uk/Pages/Home.html - - - http://www.fourgates.com - - - http://www.michiganbuddhist.com - - - http://www.destinationom.com

Meditation Gongs A bit difficult to find, but try; - http://www.dharmacrafts.com/104xBG/-Bells-Gongs-Timers.html

Meditation Images When most people think of Meditation Images, they are thinking of Mandalas, Tankas, Yantras, and maybe Labyrinths – for information on all of these, go to my Meditation Types page, then to the sub-page entitled Mandalas and Yantras.

Meditation Mandala See the’ How to Use Meditation Mandalas’ heading above.

Meditation Methods Obviously the Method used in any Meditation depends on the Type of meditation being considered – there is a big variety. To get a better understanding of this, go to my Meditation Types page.

Meditation MP3 - - Meditation Music Free - - Meditation Music MP3 - - Meditation Music to Download Free See the similar headings above for more details on each of these.

Meditation Name Suggestions See my webpage - What Meditation is for a discussion of alternate name suggestions for meditation.

Meditation Position Position in meditation is not critical – although the most common positions are either sitting in a cross-legged Yoga-type posture, or else sitting in a chair – Meditation can be carried out in ANY position, and in fact there are even moving meditations to be done whilst walking about. About the only position that is NOT recommended is lying down – as it usually is too easy to fall asleep!

Meditation Ravi Shankar MP3 Go to a Google search for Ravi Shankar, and you will literally find millions of links, many of which offer MP3s of his Meditation music.

Meditation Robes Check out these two websites for Meditation robes; - www.dharmacrafts.com, - - - http://www.fourgates.com

Meditation Room Design Meditation Rooms The main things to keep in mind about a room being specially used for Meditation are;- that it should be kept simple and free of distractions – that it is quiet - that it is warm enough – that the lighting is able to be subdued, and that it is comfortable. For a good resource that gives further good ideas and furniture etc., visit www.dharmacrafts.com/102xDR/Meditation-Room.html

Meditation Script I have several FREE meditation scripts available for you at my webpage at; - Meditate – Guided, access this by clicking on that button in the Toolbar on the upper left of this Dictionary page, and all the other pages.

Meditation Seating Meditation seating is a matter of personal preference – some people prefer to sit on a chair, some kneel using a meditation or Seiza bench, others to sit in a cross-legged Yoga-like posture on a cushion or Zafu – however, overall, the actual seating position and method is relatively unimportant – the most important is that the seating that you use is first of all – comfortable for you to use for up to a 30 minute period, and secondly – that you use the same position on a regular basis - so that your subconscious mund begins to automatically associate this position with meditation. I give more details about this near the bottom of the page in the Meditation Types page

Meditation Sounds Sounds play an important role in Meditation, and are a large topic – as it includes sounds of Mantras, sounds of bells, gongs, singing bowls, sounds of nature, sounds of chanting and so on. For a more detailed look at this topic, go to my Sounds and Meditation page – which can be accessed through the Meditation Types page.

Meditation Statistics This topic is covered in the Meditation Trend heading just a little way below this.

Meditation Teaching This is covered very extensively in all the pages of this website – so for any aspect of Meditation Teaching, just go to the relevant page subject that you would like to learn about.

Meditation to Cure Insomnia Insomnia needs some sort of guided meditation for it to be really effective. I have designed a CD that is not only very useful in curing Insomnia on an immediate basis, but also long term – it does this by incorporating very powerful Entrainment into the Guided Meditation – learn more about it at CD and MP3s

Meditation Trend Statistics have shown that there has been a marked rising trend in people learning and using Meditation in the U.S.A since 9/11 – this is to be expected, as with any increase in collective stress, there is a corresponding increase in methods that can be used to relieve that stress. It is perhaps unfortunate that it took a disaster to accelerate this trend – but previous statistics have also shown that a rise in people doing regular meditation in a city tends to ‘snowball’ – and also leads to a definite reduction in the crime rate in that city – so there is a positive side also.

Meditation Zen Room Designs The main thing to consider with Zen meditation rooms is simplicity – the absolute minimum to cause distraction. This also ties in with the Zen concept of Shibumi (Shibui) which us very much a part of Zen, including in Meditation room design. For further information on Shibumi (Shibui) see my webpage Zen which is a sub page of the Meditation Types page.

Eleventh Section of the Dictionary Dictionary N section

Naked Meditation - - Nude Meditation - - Nude Meditation Retreats These topics come up frequently, but unfortunately I have been unable to find anywhere that I would wholeheartedly recommend. However if you wade through all the hype and obvious sex oriented entries, you may be able to find something in your area that is suitable – by entering these search phrases as a Google search. (But be warned – there is A LOT of ‘junky’ stuff there also!)

Non-Duality To understand this it is important to first look at Duality - see the entry of this name in the Dictionary D Section. Non-duality refers to the concept that there is only one reality – which is Unity which means that any sense of “self and other” is an illusion, everything is one reality. This concept is common in both Hindu and Buddhist beliefs, and an often quoted saying of the Buddha illustrates this as follows; - “In seeing, there is just seeing. No seer and nothing seen. In hearing, there is just hearing. No hearer and nothing heard.”

Twelfth Section of the Dictionary Dictionary O section

Om Pendant Several places offer OM pendants, made of many different materials, one of the nicest sites that I have come across for these is; - http://www.fourgates.com/jewelry_pendants.asp

Outdoor Sounds Another name for these kinds of sounds is Environmental sounds – they can be very useful in Guided Meditations, as a background relaxation mechanism – for example, see the write-up about my Beach CD or MP3 on the CD and MP3s page.

Thirteenth Section of the Dictionary Dictionary P section

Paypal I am a little bit surprised that almost everyone does not know about this organization. It is an Internet banking company that allows transfers of money from, and to, anyone who has an E-Mail account. It is very fast, and very secure. I would guess that the majority of purchases are made on the Internet using Paypal – rather than using Credit cards. It is very easy to use, is FREE, they are very helpful, and it can be explored further by going to www.paypal.com

Positive Effects of Meditation The positive effects of meditation are many and varied, but it would be wrong to ignore that there are also the very rare negative effects. For a full explanation of both of these, look at my Benefits of Meditation page, which is a sub-page of my What Meditation is page

Fourteenth Section of the Dictionary Dictionary R section

Relaxation and Meditation Techniques - - Relaxation Meditation CD - - Relaxing Music - - Relaxing Sounds All of these are covered in several of my WebPages, such as the Benefits of Meditation, How it Works, Entrainment, pages, but for real and practical examples of these Relaxation topics as applied to Meditation, then go to the Meditate – Guided, (see the Sub page on Relaxation), CD and MP3s pages

Fifteenth Section of the Dictionary Dictionary S section

Scriptures and Meditation Covered in my page Mantras and Meditation which is a sub-page of the Meditation Types page.

Secret Garden Meditation This is a ‘Fantasy’ type classical Meditation, that uses Hypnosis techniques, to create an imaginary journey into an enchanted secret garden environment – it can be very real seeming, if it is done correctly, and is a useful tool. I will be creating my own Secret Garden Guided Meditation in the future, and it will be available on a new webpage probably called Fantasy - to find out when this will be available, why not sign up for my monthly MeditatEzine which will let you know when this and other new resources are available – there are sign-up forms at the bottom of many of my WebPages.

Self Healing Expressions Guided Meditation Like the Secret Garden Meditation above, this is another Guided Meditation that I will be creating in the not too distant future – I am just waiting for a special piece of recording equipment to arrive, and then I will be working on them. Again – sign up for my MeditatEzine to find out exactly when these will be available.

Self Actualization May also be defined as ‘Self Knowing’ – it is the desirable state of being aware of all your good and bad aspects, all your potentials – with the realization of all that you are, and therefore wishing to realize and manifest all these potentials, and becoming all that you are capable of becoming. It is a term that was mainly used in the Psychology field, especially that part of which was made popular by Abraham Maslow – but tends to be much less used nowadays.

Self Observation This is the object of many forms of meditation – to just observe oneself without interaction or attachment in any way. It is the main aspect of the third part of Zen meditation, where one just sits and observes without any mental or emotional attachment to whatever comes into the mind, or whatever is happening in the body, the breathing, or anything else. The theory behind this is to cultivate calmness of the body and mind, in order to experience insight into the nature of existence and ultimately gain Enlightenment as a result, (called SATORI in the Zen system).

Seven Chakras They are seven centers of energy that are believed to be placed in front of the spine according to the Hindu system. They also correspond to many of the Endocrine Glands of the body, and have other associations with specific colors and emotional states. I give a complete overview about the Chakras on my webpage of the same name, which is a sub-page of the What Meditation is page.

Siddhartha Gautama Another name for the last reincarnation of Buddha – who is the founder of the present day Buddhist religion. He was born as a Prince to a royal household in what is now Nepal – he rejected all his wealth and position to take up a life of meditation and asceticism, and after many adventures reached the small town of Bodh Gaya, near Varanasi in Northern India. There he meditated for 49 days and nights under a Bodhi tree – and emerged Enlightened – and was known as the Buddha from then on;- he then gave his first public sermon not long afterwards and thus promulgated the basic principles upon which the whole of Buddhism is based. He died about 400 B.C. There are of course many places to get further details of his life and teaching – but WIKIPEDIA gives a good abbreviated version, and links for more detailed information.

Sixteenth Section of the Dictionary Dictionary T section

Tantra Rituals

Tantric Yoga An area and branch of Yoga that is largely misunderstood in the West, although so-called Neo-Tantra is popular. Although in true Tanta Yoga there is certainly a link to the sexual act – it is in a very different context than that of this Neo-Tantra or ’California-Tantra.’ A true Tantra teacher – Shambavi Saraswati, states; - "Neo-Tantra ritualizes sex. Authentic Tantra sexualizes ritual". For further information about Tantra-Yoga, go to my Zen Buddhism and Tantra page, which is a sub-page of the Meditation Types page in the Toolbar on the upper left of this Dictionary page, and all the other pages.

Taoism A Chinese branch of Buddhism that is also closely tied with Chinese Traditional Medicine – started by the Chinese sage Lao-Tsu, who lived about 600 B.C. Much more detail about Taoism, see my Webpage of the same name which is a sub-page of the Meditation Types page.

The Blue Room Manifestating Meditation This is another meditation that uses hypnotic-type imagery in a Guided Meditation that takes you on an imaginary journey into a secret room that is suffused with a blue light. It does this almost in the same way that the ‘Secret Garden Meditation’ does as in the heading of that name above.

The Cost of Meditation See the ‘How much does Meditation Cost’ heading above.

Transcendental Meditation Technique A type of Mantra meditation, using derivatives of the Bija (or Root) Mantras, that was brought to the West by an Indian Hindu Yogi called Mararishi Mahesh Yogi, and became initially very popular. A lot of very valuable research was done by his organization into the personal and sociological effects of meditation, and gave us much better understanding about meditation. The technique that he teaches is very similar to the technique that I offer in my Mantras page, which is a sub-page of the Meditation Types page, and which I go into in much more detail in my Mantra Meditation E-Book which is available through the E-Books page.
