I just finished making my new seiza bench out of oak. It had always been on my to-do list to make one but I was never really sure how to go about it. I have to say in retrospect it was incredibly easy and very rewarding. Although I meditate daily, my meditation posture leaves something to be desired.
I found the Seiza bench instantly “cleaned up” my posture and opened up those important yogic channels! Using the instructions from the links on this site I also have cut out and prepped a bunch of zafus and zabutons and they are just waiting to be “stuffed and stitched” thanks for a great resource of tools!
(Thanks Robert – now you can sit/kneel as straight and as strong as an Oak while you meditate ! ……….Ian)
Single leg meditation bench
by K Lindsay
Single legged Seiza bench
I went on a ten-day silent Buddhist meditation retreat on Denman Island this July. After puzzling over it initially, I tried and like the one-legged meditation bench they had there. Instead of having wide legs at each end, they have a single, curved leg in the middle. There is something about finding one’s own balance on them that is very freeing to the spine. If you are familiar with them, I would love to see a pattern for making one on your site, or the item for sale. I imagine I am not alone in liking the single-legged stool.
(I have never come across this kind of meditation stool before – but I will certainly see what I can find out about it – thanks very much for your interesting input….Ian Kerr)
